Dave Spreadbury long time club member and player has sadly passed away!
Spreaders was a valuable playing member over many years and Captained the second XV, bringing on many youngsters, encouraging them to play a very entertaining style of rugby for which Combe Down became well known.
If you can imagine a typical prop Dave was built to play in that position, very strong in the scrum, robust, hard but very fair. A very quiet man, action not words was very much his style on the field.
Ollie Strickland reminded me that one of Dave's biggest contributions off the field was supplying us with our after match food. I've no idea what our present players have but Dave's PASTIES were always a hit with us, some say the club's results were built on those pasties😁
Also one year, in our annual Boxing Day match, a rare blip in Dave's playing record. For once he was sent off, no one could see any reason for it. Some say that was the start of a certain official's career as a top class referee! Of course it was Dave's son Tony who carried out the dirty deed !!
A lovely man much respected by all of us who played with him.
Condolences to the family from Combe Down R F C
